English for Academic Purposes

The Australia Centre’s EAP-Plus courses have been designed here in Indonesia to prepare students for either university studies abroad or academic studies in Indonesia which are taught in English. The main focus of these courses is to teach students how to write in an appropriate academic style, expand their lexical range and foster analytical thinking.

Level 1 – 4 are beneficial developmental courses that teach writing, reading, and listening skills that will adequately prepare students before taking the more intensive IELTS Preparation course.

Levels 5 – 6 take students beyond the skills required for taking the IELTS test and prepare them for writing much lengthier argument-type essays that will be expected of first-year university undergraduates. Skills taught at these levels include paraphrasing, in-text referencing and writing a bibliography.

Most of the EAP-Plus levels include topic-related documentaries as well as IELTS-type listening and reading.

EAP – Plus 1

Intermediate
This is a transition course that eases students who have been used to General English learning tasks and activities into English for Academic Purposes tasks and activities. The course is divided into four units and there are two assignments. The assignments are worth 50 percent of the final score and the final examination constitutes the other 50 percent

EAP – Plus 2

Intermediate
This course focuses mainly on natural and artificial processes and teaches students how to transform visual information into a written report. Current issues such as global warming and overpopulation are also explored. The assignments are worth 50 percent of the final score and the final examination makes up the other 50 percent.

EAP – Plus 3

Upper Intermediate
This is the first of the theme-driven academic courses and is centred on advertising. Students are taught how to write a paragraph which includes a concise topic sentence, defining relative clauses and supporting examples of the topic. This structure is then expanded into a written report that is headed by a formally-structured introductory paragraph.

EAP – Plus 4

Upper Intermediate
The theme of this course is globalization, with a particular focus on the impact of multinationals in developing countries and genetically-modified crops. Students at this level are taught how to apply analytical thinking and write an academic argument-type essay based on their understandings of the material presented and studied in the course.

EAP – Plus 5

Advanced
In the first of the two advanced EAP-Plus courses students are taught how to apply critical thinking and write a lengthier argument-type essay based on ther understandings of the course material. There is only one assignment at this level and it is worth 50 percent of the final score. This essay requires a conceded thesis, in-text referencing and a bibliography. The theme of this level revolves around Information and Communication Technologies.

EAP – Plus 6

Advanced
In this advanced EAP-Plus course students are taught how to approach the equivalent of  a first-year undergraduate unit and apply critical thinking and analytical skills to produce an argument-type essay based on their understanding of the course readings. The theme of this course is human migration – both legal and illegal. This course includes a number of documentaries and intensive readings.
